Yours truly is now a DJ working on her own show (coming soon). You can listen from 1pm-2pm on Tues. and Thurs. by streaming wwcufm.com . It's classic hits at the moment, but I'm working my way up. Soon, it'll be my own show with incredibly awesome music.

this'n'that

So sorry it's been a month since my last entry. C.B. and I have been busy with life and what-not. heh. We actually just found a new house, so we're working on setting the move-in date. I'll be on the air any day now. I've come down with some croupy thing these last few days, which has unfortunately postponed my debut on the air. While you are all awaiting my recuperation and return to the web world, check out this awesome little Philly from New York, Regina Spektor.

Power 90.5FM

Yours truly is going to be on the air, folks.
If you're in the direct area, that is the Sylva/Cullowhee area, keep an ear open on Power 90.5FM during the next few months. If you're not in the area (and believe me, few are), you can stream the station from here. I'm currently learning the ropes at the station and will soon be broadcasting live. I'll leave posts later on as I receive more information about the show I'll be doing and any promotions, or contests, etc.

updates on the Stonewall Video

Oookay

So, the awesome video premiere has been postponed. Apparently, the venue overbooked and The Campaign got booted. No worries. One day, no one will dare boot The Campaign due to overbooking. yea!
Although we're not sure the premiere party is going to happen, the video will definitely be seen. Eventually. ha! But, seriously, I have seen..with my OWN eyes... the rough cut of the video and let me just say that it kicks SO much more ass than I ever thought it could. Kudos to "a guy named Ramone"(whom I am told has directed videos for bands like Papa Roach, Slipknot, and Incubus) directing the Stonewall video. And Kudos to The Campaign's own Matt Ring for writing and producing it.
On a more promising note: there will be a show in Asheville on July 13th at Stella Blue. Tickets are $8 at the door (Ages 16 +). Rat Jackson is one of the accompanying performances-- also a local Asheville band.

The Teeth

The high energy band transfers their zest for the chaotic through their premiere album, Give Our Regards to the Sun (2002) with tracks like "When Someone Hits You". All the while, simultaneously tickling the romantic edge with their bouncy and light tracks like "What Did You Say?" and "He Came From Another Dimension". There are other titles (i.e."Then He Said") that make you envision bright lights, disco balls, and a public transit. There's a fair mix of electronic with"extraterrestrial" sound effects like whistles and synthesizing, along with traditional rock instrumentation. Their vocalist, Dave Reminick , has the gruff, melancholy Thom York (vocalist of Radiohead) sound going on.

Over all, I'd give this album a B-. High score on originality in music, lyrics, and instrumentation. Lacking a bit on an overall consistent feel.

For those "regulars" I may have

I fear you may be feeling that I've let go of my end of the deal and have not written anything new for you to drool over...or perhaps, I'm simply kidding myself. At any rate, I promise to deliver something great and worth reading as soon as I tie up a few loose ends over here. Also, since the video premiere is fast approaching, I will be quick to report back the details along with some photos. Be looking out for a new post within the next few days.

ps. I've seemed to have found myself posted up on Relix magazine's "websites we like" section on their website. So, let's hope that means I have some relevant value.

Humble beginnings

I think it should be illegal to have to get out of bed before the sun shines through your window and you wake up of your own accord, which is why I slept until 11:30 this morning. I can tell you right now that I sleep a lot later on overcast days, unless, of course I have to wake up for something. I should just begin telling people it's against my religion to use an alarm clock. I've not made too much more progress on the projects I embarked on earlier this week. I've gathered data but it's all pretty much inconclusive. I did find a pretty good book that I think will give me a hand in this publicity business. I'm wishing I had the money to go on a shopping spree and buy anything and everything that may help teach me how to do this stuff. I'm pretty creative and have a solid idea of what job I'm trying to accomplish (obviously, or I do think I would be up the creek without a paddle..pardon the cliche) but there are tricks of the trade and I believe we have a disadvantage for being a band that has a relatively small and localized fan base. I decided to take a poll of what kind of people are listening to the guys via myspace, and 99% of the "friends" listed on their first two pages were listed for business reasons. They were either there for advertisement or they were there in hopes The Campaign would need them for some activity or another. I think one of the biggest problems they have with getting a solid audience is that they don't really know what image they're trying to present. They have multiple faces, and it's difficult to adhere their sound and attitude to a specific market. I suppose that could be a benefit later on in the game, it would at least make it easier for expansion, but for the time being it's driving me nuts. These guys are experienced, but now they've asked me to help them, and I want to give them everything that could possibly establish a great presence for the band. They've released two full-length albums (their debut album Jazz for Burning in 2005 and Blood for Nashville in 2006), and if you were to Google them there'd be multiple direct hits, they're just working on a new chapter of their band by dropping a few of the original members and adding Matt Ring on drums. The majority of them all played in a band together a few years back that, I believe, opened for The Misfits. I'll have to get back to you on the details of that, because I can't remember what all Matt has told me over the past two years. ha.

First projects

It's 9:06 in the Whee, and I've gotten an early start on my day off for no particular reason other than that the dog needed to go out. I've got this runny nose thing from allergies, even though I took Claritin. It has been working so far, with the exception of this. Tonight, I think CB and I will head to the theatre for Pirates of the Caribbean: part three million. Anywho- down to business:

So, I gave Matt a ring-a-ling and we decided that our first major project was to get the mass production of the music vid that they shot last weekend rollin'. Unfortunately, I wasn't a part of the filming (though, I wish I had been). Grandma's birthday fish fry took precedence on Saturday.
I've got four companies in mind right now, but I'm generally just price comparing and seeing what packages are the best deals. If you've got any suggestions for a good company to use for DVD reproduction, please let me know.
We have a few smaller projects heading off. I've got to try to get an outline for a good bio together for the new press packs. I'm going to have to do some research to get the optimal bio. We're also in search of a new booking agent (this one isn't such a small project, but Matt's taking it on, so I'm only a secondary on the matter).

If anyone out there has any suggestions on the DVD reproduction, writing a bio, or booking agents, leave a comment.

Commenting

Just to let everyone out there know- even if you don't blog with blogger (or maybe you don't blog at all) you can still leave comments here.

In the beginning...

For starters, I'll give you the run-down of how my life is currently, then I'll flesh out into a bit of "Jess, the history".

I'm 21 years old. I live with my boyfriend, two cats, and dog in a small two bedroom in Cullowhee, North Carolina. (Don't even bother looking it up on a map. I'm pretty sure it's not labeled.) I'm a full-time Professional Writing student working at Wal-mart part-time. I'm three semesters, and two summers away from graduating. I'm not stupid, I'm just taking my time. The Campaign 1984 is the first brave soul to use me as their publicist. Projects with them begin very soon. (As a matter of fact, I need to give Matt a ring.)
My current music interests are...well, varied. As a safety, I'll say I'm "indie", but in reality I'm into just about everything with the exceptions of rap and country.
My style is pretty individual. The area I live in is rather influenced by the hippie of this generation and the last, or the "earthy" scene. Cullowhee is less than an hour from Asheville, NC and if you know Asheville, you understand what I'm talking about. So, naturally, I am influenced a tad by this strong persuasion of culture. I also have a rather strong bond with punk and hard alternative music. A pair of classic black Chucks baring holes, scuffs, and a variety of grossness stuck to the bottom hang on my shoe rack. You can find me wearing bright or bold colors in my makeup or clothing when the moon's just right. I have a scarf fetish, too. I'm not even sure how many I have now. I have four tattoos, and I'm not sure when I'll get another one. I suppose when money rains from heaven.
There's a love of "culture" (in the sense of being worldly in an intelligent way) inside of me. The Arts are something I've thrived on my entire life. A fascination in these things are obvious in every aspect of my life-- in a more physical and tangible sense, the decor in my apartment; the clothing I wear; the jewelry I adorn. In a sense of something a bit more spiritual, the music I listen to; my hobbies; the way I love; my ideals; my values; my goals and priorities; what I consider successes.
I have an extensive musical background. So, I hope you will be pleased to learn that I am not critical of music, nor promote music blindly. Meaning, I know what music is, and if it's any good or not. If it's not worth anything, I won't promote it. How are you supposed to promote something you don't have any faith in? Anyway. I began learning to read music when I was four, and began piano lessons at five. My talent and instrumental pallet expanded as I grew older, adding the clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, frech horn and mellophone, as well as years of semi-professional vocal training. You may wonder why I didn't choose to get my degree in music, rather than writing. My reasoning was that music was a passion I didn't want to turn into work. I had put many, many years into perfecting my musical knowledge and although there is still much more out there to learn, a writing career was more attractive. As a first-year college student, I chose writing in order to strengthen a skill for which I had never had the opportunity to be specially trained. The talent for writing was evident, as I was published when I was ten. I decided to push myself to see if I was actually talented, or if everyone around me just sucked. The jury's still out on that one, but I seem to be doing alright. I discovered the occupation of music publicity only a year ago, but the idea of merging my two greatest loves is completely thrilling!

My current interests as far as hobbies go: amateur (digital) photography, writing, and discovering new avenues of music.

I picked up photography about two years ago. I can't tell if I've gotten better, or the technology has. I wish I could learn to develop my own film. I think that would be more of an art form than photoshop.
As I said above briefly, I was published when I was 10, but I've been keeping a journal since I was 11. I have 10 years worth of musings scribbled in various books. I usually opted to writing in what the bookstore would designate as a "sketch book" because there were no lines, and I felt less restricted and free to write or draw or scribble or whatever.
There is always more to discover about music. It never stops evolving, and once you think you've caught up with it, it changes again.

I was raised a good little Southern Baptist just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Although, I am still a Christian (as in, a believer in Christ and the Bible) I can't say I really claim myself to be Baptist anymore. I've kind of rebelled against the whole organized religion thing. I've always been a rebel, I'm afraid. For those of you who swear by astrology, I was born on the cusp and am both an Aquarius and a Pisces. I favor the characteristics of an Aquarius more often, but I have the artistic airiness of a Pisces. They're often complimentary, but more often than not, it's just another attribute that makes me complicated.

That's me in a lengthy nutshell. I plan to narrow the focus of my blog as my projects build, but until then you'll get a porthole view of me and my progressing career.

Until next time!
